West Nile Virus Detected Within District Boundaries

A stamp depicting the West Nile virus, with a mosquito and a map background, marked from "W. Nile, NY, Early 2005."

Positve West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquito samples have been detected within the Benton County Mosquito Control District boundaries.  To see the locations on a map, please click WNV Map.

The District has two species, out of fourteen that we trap, that are known transmitters of WNV.  In response to the incease in mosquito populations and the presence of mosquito borne illness, we will be conducting increased adult mosquito control activities.  For more information, please go to our Adult Mosquito Spray Calendar.

Even though we may have not detected WNV in other parts of the District (we do not have the capacity nor the resources to trap all locations within the District), one should assume that wherever mosquitoes are present, there is a chance that they may be carrying WNV.   One should not be fearful, but rather knowledgeable about the presence, the risks, and precautions with regards to WNV.  To learn more about West Nile Virus, please click WNV and Humans

The District encourages you to consider the use of an EPA registered, personal mosquito control repellent.  For more information, please go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's webpage:  Preventing Mosquito Bites
